Time to Say GoodBye ― 2023/11/25
I have rarely seen people with fabric masks recently. During the first half of 2020, when we couldn't get ordinary white masks made of unwoven fabric in 2020, fabric masks, many of which were handmade at that time, looked so precious and helpful. I got several myself just in case.
布マスクをしている人を最近ではめっきり見かけなくなりました。2020年前半は不織布マスクが手に入らなかったため、布マスク(当時は手作りも多かった）は救いの神でした。私も念のため、何枚か手に入れました。
I am thankful to them for having given a peace of mind and the courage to go out during the difficult time, but perhaps it is time to say thank you and goodbye. I haven't even touched them since the summer of 2020 when surgical masks began to be widely available again. Plus, I don’t think I would use them even if another infectious disease emerged. I probably would be attracted to new types that would be popular then.
布マスクがあると思うと安心できたし、あの厳しい時期に外出する勇気が持てました。ただ、そろそろ手放してもいいのかな？とも思うようになりました。2020年の後半以降、不織布マスクも普通に売られるようになり、それ以来布マスクには触ってもいません。もしまた感染症が流行ったとしても、そのときはそのときでまた新しいものが欲しくなるような気もします。
In the memories of cloth masks...
My favorite was ones made by Gunze (picture above, top left) . 100% cotton and as made by an underwear manufacturer, it nicely fit my face and was comfortable to wear. Besides, it has pockets in which I could insert a piece of gauze or something as an extra "filter".

私のお気に入りはグンゼ製（上の写真の左上のマスク）でした。綿100%で下着会社が作っただけに、顔によくフィットして、付け心地もよかったです。それに、フィルター代わりにガーゼを入れられるポケットがついていたのもポイントが高かった。

グンゼのマスクについてこれだけ書くと、そんなに役立ってくれたマスクを捨てるのがなんだか悪いような気がしてきました…。もうちょっと取っておくべきかも...。

Several days ago, almost all members of the Imperial Household appeared at an Imperial Garden Party wearing masks and majority of the attendees to the party were also wearing masks.

On the other hand, the former emperor and his wife went to Kyoto a couple of day ago with no mask. But those who served them were all wearing masks...I think wearing masks is more important for older people as their immune system could be weakened. This theory isn't applicable for these special people?
一方、こちらのご夫妻は京都にノーマスクでご旅行。ただし、お世話する方々は全員マスク着用。マスクが必要なのは免疫が弱ってるお年寄りの方な気もするのですが...。

At last, the imperial couple has made a public appearance without mask.
とうとうこの方々もマスクなしで人前に登場。
However, they still religiously (I am not sure it this term is applicable to these people, though) wear their mask when they are not "on stage". ...What should I learn from their attitude？
I guess we still should put on ours when we are indoor, but they do exactly the opposite.
ただし、行き帰りはきっちりマスク着用。ここから学ぶべき点とは？
室内はマスク付けてた方がいいと思うのですが、このお二人はまるっきり逆なんですけど。

I reckon around 80 percent of people I came across wore their mask when I was doing my routine grocery shopping this morning. Alcoholic disinfectants were still everywhere. At least in this corner of Fukuoka, the locals seemed to remain alert even though the unsaid pressure to wear a mask has been shifted to an unsaid pressure to remove a mask.
By the way, I heard this "freedom from the mask" campaign was pushed by the Prime Minister in preparation for the G7 summit, but do we really have such an idiot at the top of the state?
今日の午前中買い物にいったときには、大体8割ぐらいの人がマスクを着けていた感じでした。アルコール消毒剤もあちこちにありました。マスク着用→マスク外せ、と暗黙の圧迫の内容は変わってきましたが、少なくともこの辺ではまだ皆さん用心しているようです。
今回のマスク自由化は、総理がG７用に推し進めているらしい、というのをどこかで聞いたような気がするのですが、そんな人が本当に我が国の総理大臣なのでしょうか？まさかねえ。

From tomorrow, you are finally allowed to go no-mask, officially. You will in theory not be seen as a rogue or public enemy for enjoying maskless chat at busy cafes, sneezing with your mouth open or spitting everywhere. Me? I am thinking about wearing double masks, which may protect me as if everyone around me wore their mask. No?
いよいよ明日からノーマスクが公式にOKとなります。理屈の上では、混んだ喫茶店でマスクなしで喋り散らしたり、口を開けたままくしゃみしたり、あちこちにつばを吐き散らしても、ならず者と見られたり、民衆の敵とみなされたりしなくなります。私としては、マスクを二重にしたら他の人もマスクをしているのと同じことになるかな？と考えています。だめかしら。
Why Cold Medicine？ ― 2023/01/11
Let me say something bossy in this post.
This is only my personal opinion as a lay person: a disclaimer has been made. I wonder why something called "general cold medicine” are still sold while medical professionals, including major drug companies themselves, have been asserting that there is no medicine that can cure the cold itself. These drugs just alleviate sore throat, headache and other uncomfortable symptoms that appear when you have a "cold".
In fact, I have not bought any cold medicine for ages. Instead, I stock painkillers, throat drops, fomentations in order to take care of each symptom separately, and some Kampo medicine assuming (or hoping, or wishing) they boost my body system as a whole. I have had no problem with this preparation.
I am not saying you should follow my example. But there may be an alternative to running around to get cold medicines, which are currently in short of supply, risking of picking up an unpleasant virus or two.
ちょっと偉そうなことを言います。
素人考えで恐縮ですが、「総合風邪薬」ってどうして今だに売っているのでしょう？医療のプロは（製薬会社でさえ）風邪そのものを治す薬はない、と言っているのに。いわゆる「風邪薬」はのどの痛みや頭痛なんかの不快な症状を和らげるだけだそうです。
私自身はここ何年も風邪薬を買っていません。その代わりに鎮痛剤やのど飴的なものや、シップなんかでそれぞれの症状に対処しています。それと漢方薬で体全体の調子を上げているつもりになっています。これでこれまでのところ問題なくやっています。
私の真似をせいとは言いませんが、ヘンなウィルスを拾うリスクをおかしてまで風邪薬を探しまわるのではない、「風邪」に対処する他の方法もあるのかもしれません。

One is from a local library and the rest is NEW and BOUGHT books (excused as a New Year's gift for myself).
For New Year reading, I collected some books related to the COVID-19 crisis (In fact, we are in this same old crisis even now).
These books may be appreciated as the genre of "COVID-19 literature" several centuries later.
1冊は図書館本。他の2冊は新刊！を購入！！（自分にお年玉ってことで）
お正月に読む用として、コロナ禍を取り上げた本を集めました。実際にはまだコロナ禍にあるんですけど。
こういう本も何世紀か経ったら「コロナ文学」といわれるようになるのかもしれません。
