Apple and nuts muffin and coffee: 690 yen @ Mrs. Elizabeth Maffin Hakata Station Shop
For some strange reasons, I began to crave a muffin after I heard about a food-poisoning incident caused by deadly bad muffin (not the one in the picture above). The muffins in question, allegedly with natto-like slimy texture and fermented smell, were sold to numerous people at an event and caused severe food poisoning that could have killed those who have consumed them. Also, how the trouble have been dealt with so far is so horrible that the word "muffin" hasn't left my mind.
えげつない腐れマフィン事件（写真に写っているものではありません）の話を聞いてからというもの、何かというとマフィンが気になって仕方がありません。なんでも、とあるイベントで大勢の人が買っていたマフィンが、納豆のようにぬるぬるしていて、匂いも納豆のようだったそうで、食べたら死んでもおかしくないレベルに腐っていたらしいです。その後の成り行きもすごすぎて、「マフィン」という言葉が頭から離れなくなってしまいました。

This is why I went as far as Hakata Station in search of a nice and safe muffin. I enjoyed it to the very last bit and do not feel ill or uncomfortable at all now eight hours after I consumed it.
However, please note that some of its group restaurants have caused food-poisoning cases occasionally...

そんなわけで、安全なマフィンを求めて、博多駅まで出張ってきました。全部おいしくいただいて8時間たちましたが、特段の問題はありません。ただし、この店が入っているグループの違うレストランではたまに食中毒が起きているので注意。
By the way, this shop used to offer free coffee when you buy a muffin, but now charges 380 yen for a paper cup of coffee. Demanding free coffee may be too greedy nowadays, but coffee being more expensive than a muffin is not convincing either. I wish they had an automatic coffee machine like ones we see at newer Muji shops that sells a smaller cup at 100 yen.
ところで、以前この店ではマフィンを買うとコーヒーがただで飲めたのですが、今は紙コップに入ったコーヒーが380円です。ただで出せ、というのはこのご時世厚かましいのかもしれませんが、コーヒーがマフィンより高いというのも納得いかない感じ。あたらしめの無印良品にあるような100円のコーヒーマシン（カップは小さめですが）があるといいのになあ。
Revisited and... ― 2023/03/07
I have lifted self-imposed ban on going out as the COVID-19 mayhem seems to have finally calmed down. I began to think as long as I stay alerted, the risk is not so high (in other words, I am fed up with staying home after two years of recluse. I'm not Ludvig II who I came to know through a film recently aired on WOWOW).
コロナ騒ぎがついにおさまったっぽいので、外出を自分に解禁しました。用心していれば、それほど怖いこともないかな？と思い始めたからです。ま、ひきこもりも2年を過ぎて、家にじっとしてるのにも飽きてきたというところです。先日Wowowで「ルードヴィヒ」という映画を観たのですが、とてもあの王様のようにはなれません。

というわけで、前々からもう一度行きたいなと思っていたカフェに行ってみましたが、値上がりしていてびっくりしました。
420 yen for a cup of cafe latte is totally beyond my reach except for at airports.

Not for a drop-in-at spot on my way to/from shopping trips. But there were many guests enjoying leisurely chats. The impression was strong enough to make me feel I was about to shaken off from the world of ever-rising prices.
買い物のついでに寄るには厳しい値段です。それでも、お客さんは大勢いて、楽しそうにおしゃべりしていました。そういうところを見ると、もう値上がりに振り落とされそうになってるなあ...と思いました。
I also thought that there should be division between non-masked and die-hard mask wearers, and between those who want to chat and those who prefer their break to be silent...I know I am too picky.
あと、ノーマスク派とマスク原理主義者の席は分けてほしい。それから、しゃべる派と黙食派も。うるせーよ、って感じですね。
Anyway, next time I should carry my own bottle and own snack and sit on a free bench.

My New Favorite ― 2022/12/28
When it comes to taking a short break in my neighbourhood, recently McCafé has tended to be my first choice, almost taking over my long-time favourite Mister Donut's place. I like the fact that most of the customers in the Mac Café are either alone or religiously wearing masks, and there are no elderly people or young wives with children happily chatting with their masks off.
The prices are also fairly decent. Most of items I tend to oder are around 250 yen, not everyday price, but it is forgivable for once or twice a week's treat by my standard. The serving portion is quite generous, even for an S size (probably due to the foamed milk earn the bulk). The only shortcoming is its baked good, which are not as nice as Mr. Donut's. So if I want something sweet, I go for café latte or hot chocolate

By the way, there are different drinks made with milk on the menu: café latte, cappuccino and flat white.

I tend to order a café latte at the top of the menu. But today as the business seemed slow and quiet (Anytime I go to the McCafé, it is usually quiet. Although the girls behind the counter may have other things to do than to serve customers, but an obachan doesn't care about such a thing), so I attempted to ask a girl who served me about the difference between the three was. According to her, compared to a café latte...
Cappuccino has more foam and cocoa powder sprinkled on the top. Sweetest in these three and,
flat white has more foam, more milk and tastes sweeter.
Still confusing... It should be one of my humble small objectives for 2023 to taste these three myself.
最近、近所でちょっと休憩と言えば、ミスタードーナツよりもマックカフェになることが多いです。近所のマックカフェはほとんどの客が一人で来ているか、がっつりマスクをしていて、マスクを外して楽しくおしゃべりしているご老人やお子様づれの若奥様がいないのが気に入っています。
値段もまあまあ耐えられるかという感じ。毎日だとちょっとアレだけど、週1か週2ならなんとか…。量はSサイズでも結構たっぷりあります（ミルクの泡でかさましされてる感じ）。ただし、お菓子はミスタードーナツほどおいしくないので（たまたまかもしれませんが、なんか作って時間がたった感じ、あるいはたまごとか砂糖ではない何かで作った感じがします）、甘いものが欲しい時はカフェラテかココアにしています。
ところで、牛乳を使った飲み物にはカフェラテ、カプチーノ、フラットホワイトとありますが、この違いが謎です。いつもメニューの一番上にあるカフェラテを頼むのですが、今日はお店が暇そうなので（私の行く時間は、大体いつも空いています。お店の人は接客以外の用事もあるのでしょうが、おばちゃんにはそんなことは知ったこっちゃない）、この三つがどう違うのか聞いてみました。お店のお姉さんによると、カフェラテと比較して、
カプチーノは、泡部分多め、上にココアの粉がふってある。一番甘い。
フラットホワイトは、泡部分多め、牛乳多めで甘め。
だそうです。よく分からん。来年はこの三つを制覇することを小さな目標にしましょうっと。

It is widely said that Japan has become a 'cheap country' in many ways, but when it comes to the amount of food and beverage you can buy for the same amount of money, I don't think it is always true. Take this coffee, for example. It costs 300 yen, a little more than the middle of a plastic cup the size of the one for urine sample. I know the shop has a lot to say about this, but the price per ㏄ might be more expensive than in the US?
日本はいろんな意味で「安い国」になってしまったというけれど、同じ金額で買える食べ物や飲み物の量を考えるとそうでもないような...。例えばこのコーヒー。検尿用サイズのプラスチックカップの真ん中よりもちょっと上で300円。お店にもいろいろ言い分はあるんだろうけど、1㏄当たりの値段ではアメリカよりも高いのでは？

I think Costa Coffee is, like ASDA wine （I guess no longer available though), unreasonably highly regarded in this country. While a "regular" canned black coffee is priced at 130 yen or sometimes 100 yen at vending machines, this PET-bottled coffee costs 150 yen or more. Although I was curious how it tastes, for unexplainable reasons, I felt it would be a defeat to buy it for unexplainable reasons.
But how about 110 yen? It should be forgivable if I have a half a bottle at a time and keep the rest preciously in the fridge.
日本ではコスタコーヒーは、アスダワイン(もう売ってないと思うけど）と並んで、理由なき高評価を受けているように思います。「普通」の缶コーヒーは自動販売機で買うと130円（100円のことも）ですが、ペットボトル入りのコスタコーヒーは150円以上します。どんな味なのか興味はありましたが、買ったら負けな気がして手が出ませんでした。
では110円では？1回に半分だけ飲んで、残りを大切に冷蔵庫にしまっておけばOKでしょう。
Last Ice Cream 2022 (hopefully） ― 2022/09/16
At 35℃ (in mid-September!), my ice candy bar softened quickly. It was literally a race against time to finish it.
9月も半ばというのに35℃。アイスクリームがすぐに溶けてしまい、食べるのは時間との勝負になりました。
The Most Decadent Coffee ― 2022/08/29
Instead of having a nice cup of coffee at Doutour or other coffee shops, I bought this packed ready-to-drink coffee carrying the name of a long-established coffee shop in Kyoto, priced at around 500 yen at a local .
Its tastes much stronger than the coffee I usually drink, even when diluted by half. The pack contains a litre of coffee, so it should make about 20 cups if I "double" the quantity. Then the price per cup would probably be about the same as my everyday drip coffee from convenience stores (230 yen for 10 individually packed coffee at Family Mart).

However, I know people who could save money wouldn't do this type of splash out.
ドトールなど外でコーヒーを飲む代わりに、こんなものを買ってみました。京都の老舗コーヒー店が名前貸した的なリキッドコーヒーです。ボンラパスで500円くらいでした。
飲んでみると、半分に薄めてもふだんのコーヒーよりも濃い。ということは、1リットル入りなので、大体20杯分くらいになるかと思われます。つまり1杯当たりの値段は毎日飲んでるドリップコーヒー（ファミリーマートで10パック入り230円）と大体同じくらい。
罰当たりなほど贅沢というわけでもなさそうな気もしますが、どうでしょう？
もっとも、お金を貯める人はこういうタイプの無駄遣いはしないような気がしますが。
An Ideal Coffee Break ― 2022/08/05
For the first time since the COVID-19 crisis started, I dropped in at the library's café. As this place currently opens at 11am and I usually go to the library just after it opens at 10am and leave as soon as I pick up my books at the loan counter, and lunchtime is also droplet-shower time, I haven't paid a visit to to this café for ages.
Today, however, I went to the library after 3pm and was lucky enough to catch the last order, which is currently set at 4 PM).
In fact, the operator of the café has changed and the cafe now has a new name, but the waiting staff was unchanged. Thanks Gods they didn't lose the job! The price of iced coffee has gone up by 100 yen to 300 yen. But it's perfectly OK because it is exactly what I expect for an iced coffee; dark and bitter, served with not much ice and in a glass. There were no other customers so I enjoyed that coffee without feeling scared or intimidated.
The entire atmosphere of the library was also calm and nice. Very desirable. There was no one shouting at the librarian, nor was there a person borrowing a large number of books using several lending cards. There was no waiting time and everything went smooth. Maybe early afternoon is the best time to go to a library, as long as you are brave enough to go outside when the temperature reaches over 35 Celsius.
コロナ騒ぎが始まって以来初めて、近所の図書館の喫茶室に寄ってみました。この喫茶は今のところ午前11時開店。私はいつも10時の開館直後に図書館に行って、カウンターで本を受け取ったらすぐに帰ってしまうし、ランチタイムは飛沫タイムでもあるので、この喫茶にはなかなか立ち寄ることができませんでした。
今日はいろいろあって午後3時過ぎに図書館に行ったため、運よくラストオーダー（午後4時）に間に合いました。
実はこのカフェは運営業者が変わったらしく、名前も変わっていたのですが、中の人は変わっていませんでした。失業せずによかったね！ アイスコーヒーも100円値上がりして300円。でもOKです。久しぶりにグラスに入ったアイスコーヒーを飲みました（写真は半分飲んだところ）。他にお客さまもいなくて、久しぶりに怖い思いをせずにお店でコーヒーを飲みました。
この日は、図書館全体の雰囲気も静かで気持ちよかったです。図書館員を怒鳴りつけている人もいなければ、大量の本を何枚もの貸し出しカードを使って借りている人もいませんでした。待ち時間もなく、すべてがスムース。貸し出しカウンターも空いていたし、行き帰りの暑さにさえ耐えられれば（来週いっぱいは35度超えが続くそうです）、図書館には午後行った方がいいのかもしれません。
