Still in Covid Mess2022/08/05

Believe it or not, Japan is now the world's largest producer of new CIVUS-19 infections. So many people have been infected that JR and Nishitetsu have reduced the number of bus and train services.

Postal services are generally delayed by 2-3 days. ...Japan is no longer Japan you might imagine.
Surgeries and Hospitals have long been no-go spots. It feels better to put up with a little discomfort than getting infected with something troublesome in the waiting room.
Thankfully, refuse collections, water, electricity and gas services are still working. But it could stop anytime if this keeps going.

As very usual, there have been no clear statements from the government or local authorities on this issue . All they say is: "we will closely monitor the situation" and "we will do our utmost efforts", which can be said even by me or a cat walking around. There are neither restrictions on anything, nor declarations saying "It's OK. Don't worry. You won't die from this virus, though everyone eventually die one day, anyway!" If there is nothing they can do, or they can't think of any measures at all, why not say so?  I wonder if it was like this in Japan at the end of the Second World War. Losing the grip on reality and letting a vast number of people to meaninglessly die...

An Ideal Coffee Break2022/08/05

For the first time since the COVID-19 crisis started, I dropped in at the library's café. As this place currently opens at 11am and I usually go to the library just after it opens at 10am and leave as soon as I pick up my books at the loan counter, and lunchtime is also droplet-shower time, I haven't paid a visit to to this café for ages.
Today, however, I went to the library after 3pm and was lucky enough to catch the last order, which is currently set at 4 PM).

In fact, the operator of the café has changed and the cafe now has a new name, but the waiting staff was unchanged. Thanks Gods they didn't lose the job! The price of iced coffee has gone up by 100 yen to 300 yen. But it's perfectly OK because it is exactly what I expect for an iced coffee; dark and bitter, served with not much ice and in a glass. There were no other customers  so I enjoyed that coffee without feeling scared or intimidated.

The entire atmosphere of the library was also calm and nice. Very desirable.  There was no one shouting at the librarian, nor was there a person borrowing a large number of books using several lending cards. There was no waiting time and everything went smooth. Maybe early afternoon is the best time to go to a library, as long as you are brave enough to go outside when the temperature reaches over 35 Celsius.

Mask as an Identity2022/08/09

Despite the announcement of the government's general 'opinion' (neither an "order" nor a 'request'), people seem to be sharply divided between two sides when its comes to whether wearing a face mask or not.. As of this entry, the mask police are somewhat outnumbered and the no-mask school seems to be gaining ground. The no-mask people say that 'no-mask is the norm in other countries, and Japan is lagged behind'. They seemingly do not think Thailand, Korea and China are foreign countries. Are they ghost of Japanese pre-war colonialism?

I myself should be regarded an extreme masker, and to be perfectly honest, feel a little bit discomfortable when I come across people who behave as if not wearing a mask is some sort privilege. For example, reporters on foodie TV programs (the  restaurant owners wear masks, but they don't, splashing their saliva all over the place), or people who take advantage of their small children for not wearing a mask  (even though little people could get infected and seriously ill). I know that each of them has their own reasonings, but I , a would be finalist in the All Japan Narrow-Mindedness Championship, can't smile at them. You know, the most privileged family in Japan (the Emperor's family) wear masks even at home (the Imperial Palace).

I feel that whether wearing or not wearing a mask is becoming a kind of self-assertion. The mask-wearers might demonstrate their 'civilization' and 'morality, while the no-mask party seem to assert their 'youthfulness' and 'I'm cool for not being afraid of illness' attitude.

I, who could also be a potential local winner of the National Cowardness Championship, would consider going out freely and removing my mask  i) if  the Emperor performs his duty involving train or airplane trips without mask, ii) if the coffee service at CALDI resumes, or iii) if the occupation rate of hospital bed for COVID-19 patients  downs to 10%, which is currently over 70%. Until then, I will contribute to the society by not going out as less frequently as possible.

Reissued!2022/08/13

Although having read these works on Aozora Bunko, I couldn't be happier to have a paperback version of a collection of short essays by Masaoka Shiki (I affectionately call him "Shiki-yan" in my mind), which has long been out of print. I never thought I could get a new book, nicely priced at 660 yen, by a person who died 120 years ago.
I can go everywhere (well, if I could) with Shiki-yan now!
Furthermore, his baseball-related writings  will also be available in September, which seems to be full of unread works. I can't wait!

Ainu Reading2022/08/15

All borrowed from a local library.
① is a magazine for fairy tale lovers featuring Golden Kamui and the Ainu people. The descriptions are easy to follow and the photos of the food look delicious.
② is a manga featuring the Ainu people, starred by an Ainu girl a bit older than Asilipa san. The depictions of the live of Ainu people are more realistic than Golden Kamuy. I heard there were more Ainu-themed manga, such as Shumari (by Osamu Tezuka) .
③ is a special issued magazine wholly dedicated to the Ainu culture. It probably contains the most comprehensive contents in these four, ranging from a guide to Ainu-related places to visit to movements to restore and protect the Ainu people and their culture heritages.
④ is Isabella Bird's travelogue of Hokkaido, most of which are about staying in Ainu villages and observing their lives. It was the most interesting of these four. I found an intriguing theory in its commentary section (in fact, about half of the book was commentary and notes) that Bird was not a mere Gaijin tourist. Rather, she was with some kind of 'mission'. I see, even in the Meiji era, nosing around is the nature of an Obachan and her curiosity wouldn't have raised too many suspicions.
Although this book is amusing, and would make a nice showing-off piece in the bookshelf,  a bit pricy for me (3520 yen). I might  go for this bunko version (1440 yen), including stories about her tour in other regions in Japan,  if I own it myself.

Itoshima-Age shortage2022/08/23

In my understanding the Itoshima-Age is a slightly thinner version of of thick fried bean curd (Atsuage or 厚揚げ). Because of its thinness which provide larger surface area in contact with oil, Itoshima-Age is more satisfying than Atsuage and works well as an alternative protein source to meat.
In order to protect our household budget against ever rising price of meat, I use it to bulk up the amount of protein in place of meat meat. No need the pricy soya meat.

However, this Itoshima-age has recently become increasingly hard to buy, perhaps because more people think the same way with me. It is available, but goes very quickly.
For example, at my neighborhood Marukyo where I can usually buy it for around 100 yen, the shelves dedicated for Itoshima-Age tend to become empty in the afternoon. Even in the morning, I have to go relatively early to avoid disappointment. At higher-end glossary stores where a pack of Itoshima-Age is priced at around 148 yen, Itoshima-Age tends to be available even in in the afternoon. Plus, I don't know why, but I think that the Itoshima-Age at such stores tend to bear a somewhat longer best-before date.

Only for Under 502022/08/24

I have found yet another corn potage-flavored snack at Kaldi.
Review:...I completely forgot how hard giant white corns are. My wobbly teeth nearly fell off at first bite. I remember my dentist told me I shouldn't even bite off French bread with my teeth as my gum is losing its teeth-holding function.

This snack tests how healthy your gum is. I and my gum are certainly not a subject of this snack.
