A Day without Air-Con ― 2022/08/27

Today I spent a whole day without air conditioning for the first time since this summer begun. Which means I spent a day feeling less pain in my conscience and my knees. So nice!
I could achieve this due to the lower temperature; the highest was 31 degree Celsius, which feels relatively cool in these years. In this condition I could go shopping or even walking during the daytime - if the COVID-19 was not outrageously assaulting this area.
I think in the 20th century 31℃ was the top temperature in the height of summer. We used to be allowed not to do anything but taking a nap. The whole family and all the cats used to take refuge in the 'air-conditioned room' (my family house had only one air-conditioned room).

今日は気温が31℃までしか上がらず、比較的涼しかったからこんなことができました。このくらいの気温なら、買い物にも行けるし、何ならウォーキングにも行っちゃう？というくらいの勢いです。でもコロナで全部だめ。
20世紀のころは、31℃は夏の真っ盛りの真昼の気温だったような気もします。何もしなくて、もう昼寝だけしてればいいよ、という感じだったような。家族全員と猫一同が「エアコンの部屋」（私の家にはエアコンのある部屋は一部屋だけでした）に避難してきたものです。
The Most Decadent Coffee ― 2022/08/29
Instead of having a nice cup of coffee at Doutour or other coffee shops, I bought this packed ready-to-drink coffee carrying the name of a long-established coffee shop in Kyoto, priced at around 500 yen at a local .
Its tastes much stronger than the coffee I usually drink, even when diluted by half. The pack contains a litre of coffee, so it should make about 20 cups if I "double" the quantity. Then the price per cup would probably be about the same as my everyday drip coffee from convenience stores (230 yen for 10 individually packed coffee at Family Mart).

Not so outrageously decadent, don't you think so?
However, I know people who could save money wouldn't do this type of splash out.
ドトールなど外でコーヒーを飲む代わりに、こんなものを買ってみました。京都の老舗コーヒー店が名前貸した的なリキッドコーヒーです。ボンラパスで500円くらいでした。
飲んでみると、半分に薄めてもふだんのコーヒーよりも濃い。ということは、1リットル入りなので、大体20杯分くらいになるかと思われます。つまり1杯当たりの値段は毎日飲んでるドリップコーヒー（ファミリーマートで10パック入り230円）と大体同じくらい。
罰当たりなほど贅沢というわけでもなさそうな気もしますが、どうでしょう？
もっとも、お金を貯める人はこういうタイプの無駄遣いはしないような気がしますが。
August Reading ― 2022/08/30
In August, we are supposed to relearn something about the WWII. In my case, the learning tendｓ to be reading books or watching TV programs which depict the war from the Japanese point of view like these books.

This year, as I had plenty of time, I tried to see the event from different angles.
1 is a general corniche of the rise and fall of Japan's militarism from the Meiji Restoration to the end of the WWII.
It is like a collection of Wikipedia posts, but I like this relatively matter-of-fact description. I don't have to get unnecessary emotional while reading. Borrowed from a local library.
2 is an American sailor's diary during his three-year service on the Pacific Ocean. Also a library book.
3 are the world-famous nonfiction books comprised of memoirs of Russian female soldiers (the one with red cover is its comicalized version) and children. From my bookshelves.
Although this year's August nearly ends, I think I will keep reading more of this "in their shoes" accounts, which might offer fresh perspectives and hopefully clear my longtime fuzzy assumptions.
8月は、戦争について学びなおす月ということになっています。私の場合はテレビ番組を見たり、本を読んだするのですが、これまでは日本側から書かれたものばかり見たり聞いたりしてきました。
今年は時間もたっぷりあることだし、違う角度から戦争を見てみようと思いました。
①は日本の明治維新から戦争が終わるまでの、軍国主義の盛衰をまとめたものです。ウィキペディアをまとめたものを読んでいるような気もしましたが、このくらい淡々としていた方が、感情的にならずに（疲れずに-英語で書いてあるから疲れるんだけど）読めていいと思いました。図書館で借りた本です。
②アメリカの水兵の日記です。この人は3年間も軍用船に乗っていたそうです。これも図書館の本です。
③世界的に有名なロシア（戦争当時はソ連）のもと婦人兵のインタビュー（赤い表紙の本は漫画版）と当時の子どもたちの思い出をまとめたもの。これは私の手持ち。
8月ももう終わりですが、この手の本をもっと読みたくなってきました。相手にとっては、こんな戦争だったんだという新しい見方を知ることもできるし、長年のモヤモヤも解消されるような気もします。
