Half Mast ― 2022/07/13
It has past five days since our former PM was shot to death. And a half flag is still set in front of a local library.
I think he did what he thought he should do, and I have no reason to throw stones at a dead man. Yes I know.
But when I saw the half-masted flag, I couldn't help help feelling something indescribable.
By the way, if the owner of a twitter account dies, is there anything can be done for it? Mr.Abe's Twtter has been left untouched since the day before his death.
安倍元総理が銃撃されてから5日経ちましたが、図書館の前の旗はまだ半旗の状態です。
元総理はご自分がすべきことをしているとお考えだっただろうし、亡くなった人に石を投げるべきでないことは分かっています。
でもこの半旗を見ると、何とも言いようのない気分になりました。
それよりも元総理のツイッターって、他の人が何かできないのかなあ…。亡くなる前日のまま放置されてるんですけど…。
New Record Everyday ― 2022/07/24
The daily count of newly COVID-19 cases found in Fukuoka Prefecture finally hit 10,000 mark, the biggest ever number the Fukuokans have seen, in the middle of the week.
Some people comment that this increase is due to the Yamagasa festival (and the Mayor of the city who gave it a green light) during which bare-faced men march in crowded area and (are said to) enjoy themselves in groups.
However, though not as much as in Fukuoka, the newly found cases have been skyrocketing almost every region in Japan.
So I personally don't think that this mess is entirely the Mayor's fault. But why he hasn't done any press conference, which he is supposed to be good at, after the Yamagasa? Running away from what is inconvenient for him, as his usual? Despite his job? Even after being paid for twelve years of career as a mayor? I in a way admire his thick nerves now.
Anyway, we will never forget his remark: "Out immune system (against COVID-19) could be boosted through joining Yamagasa"（I am quoting with a malicious intention, of course)

福岡県ではコロナ新規陽性者の数が、とうとう1日当たり10,000人を超えました。新記録。しかも先週の半ばに10,000人超えしてから、毎日新記録更新中です。
山笠（とその開催を許した市長）のせいでこんなことになったという人もいます。ノーマスクでわあわあ街中で騒いで、その後はグループで飲みに行くんだから、そりゃあ感染上等！ってもんでしょう。ただし、福岡だけではなく、他の県でもえげつない勢いで新規陽性者は増えているので、今度ばかりは市長だけのせいではないような気もします。
しかし、またいつものように雲隠れして、得意なはずの記者会見もしないって…。12年も市長しているのにこういう時に知らんぷりって…。ここまで来ると、ある種すがすがしい。
とはいえ、市長の名言「山笠に参加して（コロナへの）免疫アップ」（←悪意をもって引用してます）を忘れる人はいないでしょう。あーあ。

Saga completed ― 2022/07/25
The 31st (final) volume of Golden Kamuy has arrived on Friday, 22. It looks about Needless to say, I thoroughly enjoyed it during the weekend.
The story is simply divine. The more you read, the more profound you will find it is, a true masterpiece (I'd like to add a small 'ツ' to spell "傑作ッ" here to emphasize how great it is, but I don't know how to do that in English). Anytime I read it it made me in tears absolutely without exemption. Its tear-inducing power is almost as strong as one of 'Nuovo Cinema Paradiso', if not more powerful. Especially when it comes to the last scene of Sergeant Tsukishima, I always burst into tears.
I now own volumes 1-5 and 27-31. An odd purchase, but the thought that there are still 20 volumes left to buy gives me a bit of hope to live.
The book on the left in the picture above is the fan book which works as a great reference.
22日（金）にゴールデンカムイ第31巻（最終巻）が届きました。もちろん、週末に堪能しまくりました。
読めば読むほど奥が深い、まさに傑作（ここで「傑作ッ」のスペルに小さく「ツ」をつけて、その素晴らしさを強調したいのですが、英語ではどうしたらいいのかわかりません）でした。読むたびにワーっと泣いてしまいました。「ニュー・シネマ・パラダイス」並みに泣かされました。特に、月島軍曹のラストシーンになると、泣かされるのが分かってるのに必ず京唄子なみの大号泣。
現在、1～5巻と27～31巻を持っています。変な買い物になってしまいましたが、この先20巻も買えると思うと、生きる希望が湧いてくるというものです。
写真の左側の本はファンブックです。これがまたいい参考書として素晴らしく役に立っています。

All are from a local library.
1 is a biographical novel partly based on real stories, intertwining lives of Sakhalin Ainu people and a Russian female soldier.
2 is also a life story of a pioneering woman who settled in a wild land in Hokkaido.
3 is a collection of papers. So So So academic. I thought I may be able to get a gist of the backgrounds and consequences of the Russo-Japanese War, but I even couldn't finish a single chapter.
4 is a legendary nonfiction book regarding a series of disasters caused by a giant bear.
全て図書館本です。
①は樺太アイヌの人々とロシアの女性軍人を絡めたストーリー。
②これも伝記小説で、北海道開拓民になった女性の物語でした。
③は論文集。まったくはがたちませんでした。日露戦争の背景とその影響についてざっくり知りたいと思って借りたのですが、1章たりとも読み終えることができませんでした。
④は伝説のノンフィクション。巨大クマが起こした大惨事の話でした。
From My Library ― 2022/07/27
As my loan quota at a local library became full with reference books for a work, I combed through my bookshelves for something to leisurely reading and I found I had some books that (might) be related to Golden Kamui. What a connection!
1 is a story about prisoners treated harshly in Hokkaido during the Meiji era. I didn't know that Botaro the Pirate actually existed (p.222). It seems that the real one was as manly as the one in the manga.

2 is a collection of columns on the end of the Edo period, including a story about Takeaki Enomoto (p.90) who fought the Hakodate War with Toshizo Hijikata. Other stories also worth reading. All materials are pleasantly detached from the reality and make a perfect in-bed, sleep-inducing reading.
3 is a collection of short stories by Ryunosuke Akutagawa. In the story titled "Shogun", a character said to be modelled on Lieutenant General Hanazawa appears.
図書館の貸出枠がいっぱいになったので、何か読むものを…と思って私の本棚を漁っていたら、ゴールデンカムイに関係がある（かもしれない）本が見つかりました。ご縁を感じるわあ。
1は明治時代に北海道で囚人がものすごい目にあわされていたというお話。海賊房太郎が実在していたとは（p.222）。本物も男前だったっぽいです。

２は幕末のこぼれ話的なエッセイ。榎本武揚についての記述がありました（p.90）。他にも読み応えのあるお話がいっぱい。ほどほどの現実離れ感が心地よく、寝る前に読むのにぴったりでした。
３は芥川龍之介の短編小説集。といっても芥川に長編はない（と思う）のですが。「将軍」という作品に花沢中将のモデルと言われる人物（登場しています。
Rules Are Changing ― 2022/07/28
Iced coffee (short) and Kome-koji waffle: around 530 yen
Yesterday I had a iced coffee at Tully's near Fukuoka Tower for the first time in a while. There only a couple of clients and all of them were alone so I didn't feel much fear taking my mask off and have a coffee.
But I was a little surprised to so many things had changed. It was like being a spot- the-difference quiz： Iced coffee no longer comes with a straw, and is served in the same paper cup as hot coffee and wet wipes were half the size. I in a way understand how hard they struggle to keep their business running. Nevertheless, I also think there should be something to do before put the burden of inconvenience on their customers. It seems as if the SDGs and many other beautiful slogans are used as excuses by the companies to do whatever they want to do...
The snacks didn't taste good either... It had been a long time since I had a coffee outside, so I was really looking forward for this experience since the night before, which turned out to be a disappointment.
I realized once again ultimately I'm a Doutor person.
きのうは久しぶりに福岡タワーの根元にあるタリーズに行ってみました。店内は空いていて、お客は2，3人。全員一人で来ていたので、マスクを外すことにあまり恐怖感を感じずに済みました。
ただ、色々変化があってちょっと驚きました。間違い探しクイズの中にいるようでした。
アイスコーヒーにはストローが付かずに、ホットコーヒーと同じ紙コップに張っていました。ウェットティッシュは半分の大きさになっていました。色々言いたいことは分かるんだけど、その前にでやることあんだろ！と思いました。なんかSDGsとか色んな事を企業が都合よく解釈してる感じ…。
お菓子もおいしくなかったし...。外でコーヒーを飲むのは久しぶりで、前の晩から楽しみにしていたのに、がっかりしました。
やっぱり私はドトール派だなあ。
