Cursed Start ― 2023/10/03
On the first day of our Hokkaido tour, we encountered all imaginable (but not fatal) troubles. The followings are the highlights.
北海道旅行の初日には、死んじゃうようなものではないものの、ありとあらゆるトラブルに見舞われました。例えば...
1. To begin with, our flight at 8:00 am, which means we had to leave home at 5:30 am, was delayed one hour, making our early rise completely wasted.
まずは、飛行機が1時間遅れ。8時発だったから家を5時半に出たのに...。せっかく早起きしたのに...。、
2. Once we all got onboard, an idiot released an oxygen mask above his seat, which added another one-hour to the delay. As a result, three people sitting on the seat of concern were made to move to other seats in the already packed plane, which took a good 30 minutes.
I saw a hanging oxygen mask in airplane for the first time in my entire life, I believe he didn't do that intentionally, but wonder how he did that? As the captain decided to fly anyway, we flew with the hanging mask, which was a rather surreal view.
2．機内に入ったら入ったで、どこかの馬鹿が酸素マスクを出してひと騒ぎになりました。これでさらに1時間の遅れ。飛行機はすでに満員だったのに、酸素マスクが出てきた列に座っていた3人が席を移動することになり、さらに30分遅れ。
飛行機の酸素マスクがぶら下がっているのをはじめて見ました。わざとしたのではないとは思いますが、どうして酸素マスクを出すことになったのか謎です。そうこうするうちに機長がとにかく離陸することにしたことらしく、酸素マスクがぶら下がったままの出発となりました。ちょっと不思議な眺めでした。
3, As usual for any air travel, the plane was filled with toddlers' screams when it began to descend. The energetic choir lasted over 30 minutes. I was then surprised at myself staying calm. I have grown to somewhat accept them, and even sympathize the kids and their parents for having such a torturing time (though we were tortured, too, by them).
3. よくあることですが、飛行機が着陸態勢に入ると機内に子どもの悲鳴が鳴り響きました。 まあまあ30分は力強い叫びが続きました。この状況で冷静でいられる自分にちょっと驚きました。ま、しょうがないよね、お子たちも親御さんたちもつらいよね、と思ったりして。ま、こっちもお前らからつらい目にあわされてるんだがな。
4, After somehow finishing our businesses of the day, we got to our hotel to find our luggage that we had sent beforehand hadn't arrived. Which meant that we would have to put on same socks for two days in a raw and go out without sunscreen cream in September... If only had I brought my copy of shipping label, I could have solved the problem quickly.... I burst into tears of regrets. After all, the suitcase got to us the next morning after my tearful appeal and my husband's wordy complaint and the hotel receptionist's hard work. I felt heavily indebted these guys throughout our stay there.
どうにか用事を済ませてホテルにたどり着くと、事前に送っていたスーツケースが不着。2日続けて同じ靴下を履いて、9月に日焼け止めなしで外出するという事態に。私が送り状を持参しさえしていればすぐに解決できたのに。後悔のあまり泣けてきました。私の涙の訴えと、夫の長いクレームとホテルのおじさんの奮闘の結果、荷物は翌日の午前中に到着しました。この二人には、滞在中ずっと頭が上がりませんでした。
At the end of the day, we had exhausted but celebrated our fortune for not having been killed.
まあこんな一日が終わり、へとへとになったものの、とりあえず殺されなくて済んだ幸運を祝いました、
Sapporo Snapshots Part 2 ― 2023/10/04
As I mentioned in my previous post, Sapporo has lots of tourist attractions within walking distances or few underground stations from the central train station. Plus, these spots are all, ah, with an exception or two..., so attractive. I could have spent whole day at each site.
繰返しになりますが、札幌駅の徒歩圏内や駅から地下鉄2～3駅の範囲内に観光名所がたくさんあります。しかも、どこも（例外はあるものの）1日中いても飽きないほど魅力的でした。
I simply envy the locals who can walk around Hokkaido University campus daily.
北大が散歩コースに入ってるっていいなあ。
The natural-looking but extremely well-maintained park-like site is open to public for free (with some schemes to lead visitors spend money. I'll mention this later).
自然っぽいんだけど、めちゃくちゃ手入れの行き届いた、公園のような敷地は無料開放されていました（ただし、訪問者にお金を遣わせる仕掛けあり。これについては後述します）。
I particularly love its museum.
特に気に入ったのは博物館。
The ground and first floors were like a promotion space inviting new students. I think the beauty of it was on the second floor where real treasure, exactly what I imagine from the term "university museum" are on the show; slightly dusty(-looking) stuffed animals,
1階と2階は入学希望者向けの宣伝っぽかったのですが、3階はまさに私の中で大学博物館とはこれだ！という感じの展示でした。ちょっと古びた感じのはく製が物陰にあったり、
a bit scary specimen, including those of skin diseases,

so on in a time-honored building with no other visitor.
I seemed to have been so impressed that I got quite a bit of souvenirs that I don't usually buy when I travel.
古い建物の中にあるという、しかも他の見物人がいないという、まさに私のツボ。感激のあまり、普段は買わないようなお土産を買いこんでしまいました。
Two sets of badges, a pack of single drip coffee and
original clear files worth around 2000 yen in total.
バッジ2パターンに、ドリップパックとクリアファイルまで。合わせて2000円くらい払いました。
I even got a book catalogue
at the visitor information center (this university is equipped with such a facility!) so that I could order a book and stay in touch with it after returning home. Am I an easy prey for the marketing team?
ビジターセンター（そんなものまである）で出版目録までもらって、ご縁を保つ気まんまん。マーケティングチームの思うつぼってやつですね。
Also, the observatory on the 19th floor of the city government building is open to public for free.
市役所の19階には「展望回廊」があり、こちらも無料開放されていました。
From which you can look down the clock tower.
上から時計台を見ることができます。
But this spot seems to be much less sung.
Even the receptionist on the ground floor failed to convey how nice and relaxing it was. Actually, there was a restaurant with a view on the same floor, which would have been packed in other cities of the similar scale, was almost empty. We didn't realize there would be such a spot until we saw it with our own eyes.
ここはあまり知られてないようで、とても空いていました。1階の受付のお姉さんもその良さとのんびりできることを伝えきれないようでした。同じ階に展望レストランもありましたが、とても暇そう。同じ規模の都市に同じものがあったらめちゃくちゃ混みそうなのになあ。実際、私たちも現場に行くまでこんなレストランがあるとは知りませんでした。
About food...well, I would say you get what you pay for everywhere.
Attractive-looking dishes with a hill of uni or ikura don't come cheap and you have to expect long long queues. Discouraged from splashing out on luxurious Kaisen-Don, we went for Genghis Khan,
食べ物については、まあ、お金を払えばそれなりに、としか。
ウニやいくらが山盛りになったステキごはんは安くはありませんし、めちゃくちゃ長い行列は当然。

deep-fried scallops in sympathy for local fishermen who are in the trouble in export their harvest to a certain country,
ホタテフライ定食を食べました。これはホタテが輸出できなくなった水産業者への共感を示したつもり。
with semi-dried fishes, 一夜干しの魚も。
and on the last night of our stay, packs of sushi bought at department store, There might have been more affordable option in less well-known places, but it should be spared for the locals,
最終日の夜はデパ地下で買ったお寿司で済ませました。探せばもっと安い店もあるのかもしれませんが、それは地元の人のためのような気もします。
While being tight-fisted with seafood, we enjoyed sweet treats unlimitedly every single day during our stay.
おさかなにはケチケチしつつも、甘いものに関しては無制限。毎日おやつ祭りでした。

Cursed? ― 2023/10/07
Recently clothing worth around 340 thousand yen have been stolen from Uniqlo in Mark Is Momochi. I personally wonder how they could steal that worth from Uniqlo, considering its price range.
マークイズももちのユニクロで、34万円相当の服が盗まれたそうです。ユニクロでそれだけの価格分の服を盗むのは大変そうな気もしますが。
In fact, this is not the very first disaster for this shopping center and its nearby PayPay Dome. This area, called Jigyohama, has been suffered disturbing incidents unimaginably often.
マークイズとその隣にあるペイペイドームがある地行浜地区では、これまでにも悲惨な事件があり得ないほど頻発しています。
The memory of the distressing murder case that took place a couple of years ago in the mall is still fresh. A young girl was stubbed to death in a toilet on the ground floor by a complete stranger to her.
何年か前にマークイズで起きたひどい殺人事件はまだ記憶に新しいところです。この事件では、若いお嬢さんが1階トイレで、顔見知りでも何でもない男に刺殺されました。
Also, just a month or so ago, seven workers dissembling a stage set for a concert were hit and injured by a steel frame that fell onto them in the Dome.
一カ月くらい前には、コンサートのセットを解体していた人たちの上に鉄骨が落下、7人がけがをしました。
Furthermore, a boy drowned at nearby beach this summer. Talking about the beach, unidentified bodies have relatively often been found floating offshore nearby. Incidentally, this very beach was where Swimming World Championships took place this summer.
もっと言えば、今年の夏は男の子が近くの浜で溺死しました。その沖では、身元不明の遺体が割としょっちゅう見つかっています。ちなみに、この浜は今年の夏、世界水泳選手権の会場となりました。
Taking the premature demise of the shopping mall previously stood on the same site and a series of evil crimes having occurred in surrounding areas into account, I can't help thinking this site is cursed in some ways.
マークイズ以前に同じ敷地にあったモールが短命だっとことや、この付近で凶悪事件が多数発生していることを考え合わせると、なんかここ呪われてない？と思ってしまいます。
Welcome Back, Mr. Donut! ― 2023/10/07
Mr. Donuts has back to Nishijin! It has opened on the ground floor of Praliva, taking over the space that PRONTO used to be.
There used to be two Mr Donut outlets in this area. One was, as long as I remember, at where now Doutour is located. and the other was on the ground floor of Nishijin Palace, which is itself destined to be demolished in very near future.
However, probably with the rise of lower-priced alternatives sold at convenient stores, these two doughnut shops all disappeared without saying goodbye to me.
In fact, there was a "doughnut war" in this area among Southernmaido Donuts, Floresta and Mt. Donut(s) and some others I can't remember. Then only Floresta has survived along with some newcomers that have popped up and disappeared.
Having frequented to each store when I was young, I am so happy to see its comeback!
The new store, however, became much smaller than the old stores, with possibly less than half eat-in space.
ミスタードーナツが西新に帰ってきました。プラリバ1階、以前プロントがあった場所です。
このあたりには、前はミスタードーナツが二店舗ありました。一つはたしか今ドトールになっているところ、もう一つは西新パレスの1階でした。西新パレスは近々取り壊しになる予定です。
西新はかつて、サザンメイドドーナツ、フロレスタ、ミスタードーナツの間で「ドーナツ戦争」があった場所。結局フロレスタだけが生き残り、そこに新勢力が加わっては消えるといった感じになっていました。
両方の店に若いころしょっちゅう行ってた私としては、西新に再登場してくれてうれしい限りです。
ただし、新店舗は以前のお店よりもずっと狭くなりました。イートインのスペースは半分以下かも。
I naturally couldn't even enter the store, not mention to enjoying a cup of coffee with a nice donut. I guess it would be less busy in half years of time, then it should be my turn. I will definitely frequent to it as I did in my late teens.
当然、この日はコーヒーをおともにドーナツを食べるどころか、お店に入ることもできませんでした。半年もたてばちょっとは空いてくるでしょうから、そのときは10代後半のように通わせてもらいましょうっと。
Two Marathons ― 2023/10/10
In this time of the year, we have two big-scale marathon events in a space of less than one month in this city. One is simply called Fukuoka Marathon, taking place on 12 November, which everyone can enter by paying entry fees. The other is Fukuoka International Marathon on 3 December. This is for elite runners, as elite as being considered to be national representatives.
この季節、福岡ではわずか1カ月の間に大きなマラソン大会が2つ開催されます。ひとつは「福岡マラソン」。わかりやすい。11月12日に介されます。これは誰でも参加料を払えば参加できる市民マラソン。もう一つは12月3日開催の福岡国際マラソン。こちらは日本代表候補になるようなエリート選手のマラソンです。
But to me, both event looks quite similar-- marathon is marathon, no? Anyway, you run about 40 km without break or so on expensive specialist shoes, blocking public road, and upload you photos or videos online. Regardless of whether you are paid or you pay money to run you do the same thing.
とはいうものの、私から見たらなんで2つあんの？という感じがします。どちらも高価な靴を履いて40kmばかり休憩なしで走って行動をふさぎ、写真をSNSにアップすることに変わりはないような。お金をもらって出るか、お金を払って出るかの違いはあっても、やることに変わりはないのでは？ダメ？

Their courses look similar to each other, too: starting at around the city centre, running across the city, whether you ｇo westbound or eastbound.
この2つのマラソンはコースまで似ていて、どちらも中央区のどこかでスタートして、市内を横切るというもの。違いは西に行くか、東に行くかくらいのもんです。
Probably because I am not at all a sporty type, I simply wonder why we have to host two races in a single city. What's more, incredibly, I have heard some people (hope to) run the races every year. It is, to me, like taking a TOEIC or IELTS test every year, which sounds nothing but a nightmare!
一都市で2つのマラソン大会を開く理由が分からん、というのは私はスポーツ音痴だからでしょうか。もっと言えば、毎年レースに参加（しようと）する人たちもいるらしいです。それってTOEIC的なテストを毎年受験するのに等しいのでは？ひゃー。

I spent most of my time travelling in September and this bag has been together during all the way. I could keep everything I needed in one bag and throw everything I got on the way into it. Very reliable buddy.
9月は旅行してばかりでしたが、このバッグはどこに行くにも一緒でした。必要なものを全部1つにまとめて、道中で手に入れたものもすべて放り込んでおける、頼りになる相棒になってくれました。
So I know there is nothing wrong with this bag. Or rather, this is made extremely well, having every characteristic that attract an obachan. Having said all that, to be honest with you, there is nothing exciting with it, either. ...Well, maybe I am too demanding hoping a bit of fanciness for this type of practical items.
というわけで、このバッグには非のうちどころがないのは分かりました。というか、おばちゃんのお気に入りポイント満載の、すごくよくできたバッグです。とはいえ、申し訳ないのですが持っていて楽しくないのも確か。この手の実用品にオサレを求めるのは用きゅしすぎなのかもしれませんが。

Chocolate-dipped churro with iced coffee at a local Mr. Donut. Recently a local shopping mall where this Mr. Donut is has changed chairs and tables to more stylish ones. With the new furniture, the terrace became somewhat looking like a poolside cafe in a resort hotel.
ミスタードーナツでチョコチュロとアイスコーヒー。このミスタードーナツがあるショッピングセンターでは、最近テラス席のイスとテーブルがなんかカッコいいのに変わっていました。ちょっとリゾートホテルっぽくなったような。

Custurd pudding and iced coffee, as usual, at Cafe Muji in Daimyo. The price has not so horribly gone up compared to other cafes and food in general.
大名のカフェムジでいつものプリンとアイスコーヒー。他のお店や食料品全般と比べても、ここの値上がりはそれほどえげつなくはないような気がしました。

Meanwhile, the price felt having skyrocketed here in Apetito, Tenjin. I believe this cafe used to offer coffee at 220 yen, served in a nice-looking mug cup, in the morning if you place your order before 11a.m.. But the early bird discount is no longer available. Now a paper cup of coffee cost me 396 yen even though I ordered it 10:48 am.
一方、天神のアペティートは高くなったなあ、という印象。確か午前11時までなら、カッコいいマグカップに入ったコーヒーが220円だったと思うんだけど...。いまは紙コップのコーヒーが396円もします。注文したのは10時48分だったんだけどなあ。
Free of charge at Kanten Papa Shop near RopponMatsu
To be more precise, this set of mini desert （I think it was something called "green grape kanten") and coffee was offered. To be precise, this treat was a kind of exchange for my purchase of some Kanten-based products.
六本松からちょっと行ったところのかんてんぱぱショップというところで、ミニデザートとコーヒーのセットをタダでごちそうになりました。正確に言えば、お店の商品をいくつか買ったので、そのお礼、ということになるのでしょうか。接待。

Actually, this shop has been a mystery for me. It has its headquarter in Nagano where I visited in September. I dropped in at a cafe near the Zenko-ji, run by the same company and had a cup of coffee at probably 400 yen.
このお店は私にとってはちょっと不思議な存在です。本社は長野にあります。9月に長野に行ったときに善光寺のそばに同じ会社がやっているカフェがあり、立ち寄ってコーヒーを飲みました（こちらは有料で、400円くらいだったと思います）。
Both shops were quiet with, I hesitate to say, very few customers. They didn't look booming in any sense. To be honest, I don't think so many Kanten enthusiasts. But this Ropponmatsu shop has been there, kept clean and nicely presented, for years. I wonder where they get profit that big enough to keep such quiet and peaceful places.
どちらのお店も静かで、言いにくいのですがお客はほとんどいませんでした。そう見ても大繁盛とは言いにくい感じ。まあ、寒天マニアというのはそれほど多くはないのでしょうが。それでも、このお店（六本松のほう）は長いこと営業していて、いつもキレイで感じよく保たれています。こんなに静かで平和なお店を維持するだけの収益を、この会社はどこから得ているのか、謎です…。

Taiwanese sponge cake and milk at 340 yen at a local bakery.
Milk went very well with this sponge cake. But the eat-in space was a bit chaotic. The space was also used as a warehouse.

最後は近くのパン屋で台湾カステラと牛乳。牛乳は台湾カステラとよく合いました。ただ、このイートインコーナーはけっこうスゴイことになっていました。倉庫としても使われているらしく、私が座った席の横はこんなことになっていました。
They must have tried to make this mess less visible though ...
目立たせないようにしている努力は認めます…、
Simply Incredible ― 2023/10/21
I just wonder how this bento box can be sold at 298 yen (321 yen with tax, to be fair) at the time of ultra inflation like now. I wouldn't be surprised even if the onigiri part of this bento cost 298 yen. Awesome in many ways.
この物価高のご時世に298円ってどういうことなんでしょう。いや、税込み321円ですけど。おにぎり部分だけがこの値段で売っていてもおかしくないのでは...。いろんな意味ですごい。
