Then He Came ― 2014/03/02

(Continued from the previous post)
Meanwhile, my husband was nicely taken in the business gimmick. So nicely as to buy Kanbei picture cards (350 yen/ 5 pieces including postage) at a local post office, not knowing to whom he would send the cards.
Please don’t think I am harassing you if you receive one of these from me.

Hidden Path ― 2014/03/04
I found a new walking route.
There is a big bridge on my walking route and I assumed there was no crossing on/nearby the bridge.

So I walked some extra 1,000 steps to go to the other side of the road at the nearest crossing with traffic right.

But Today I saw someone appearing out of nowhere around the entrance of the bridge.

So I ventured to take a different turn, and found a small cave-like pedestrian tunnel.

Looks safe, and I stepped ahead,

then reached the
other side of the road with less than 100 steps. Surprise!

I went on and came across the back of Fukuoka Detention Centre.

I didn’t know around the detention centre was a quiet residential area which does not give an impression that there are bad (or suspected as bad) people confined in the very close vicinity. There was a little playground where a cat was leisurely walking around.

A very peaceful view…only if capital punishments do not take place (probably, as I don’t know which area of the centre is used for such purpose) within only a few metres…
How Did You Do? ― 2014/03/11
Today, entrance exam for publicly funded high schools was conducted throughout Fukuoka. Generally speaking (or overly generalised my assumption is), in terms of high schools, state schools are more prestigious than private ones. In addition, tuition fees of state schools are of course much lower (but fees are charged anyway) than private ones’.
The exam today therefore must be extremely important for the examinees and their parents.

So important that a local TV station broadcasts a program telling the keys to the tests on the same day it was done, sponsored by an after-school preparatory school specialised in high-school exams. Was there such an informative TV programme over in my time? Who is this program aimed at, in the first place?
If I were a 15-year old having just finished the exam, I wouldn’t want to know the answers, through which I have to know whether I had achieved my goal (or not). I remember I just forgot everything I had done for the exam at the moment I finished it three++ decades ago.
Messenger of Spring ― 2014/03/12

Buds of them look appetising . I love their slight bitterness.
But once blossom, rapes are no longer appetising, but bring a touch of spring.

Consumer Warning ― 2014/03/14
There have been some sly (clever) business practices under the name of “preparation for tax hike”. As you know, from 1st April, our consumption tax jump up to 8% from current 5%. Foods and everyday necessaries are not exception.
Basically, most of our daily shopping has been done on a tax-including
basis (probably the government told the shops to do so). So price tags tell you
exactly what you pay at the till. But recently, for the past few weeks, some supermarkets
started using an excluding-tax method without noticing shoppers in advance. So,
at such stores, things are at a glance look
attractive (lower priced than other stores), but you may well get shocked at the exact amount you have to pay at the till.
Let me talk about my experience. I am not blaming them, but, Sunny,a
notably crafty clever merchant in the Walmart empire, is always crying how low-priced their products are. And I
believed what they said until yesterday—when I first noticed a poster saying “ズバリ! 外税”,
or “YES ! tax-excluded”. It was put up at the till. No way and time to return
the things in the basket, and I paid more than I expected. Maybe the
difference might be negligible if I bought the same items at Marukyo (which is still adopting the good old tax-including system).
But it is also true I felt very much swindled. They could have put the poster at the entrance or conspicuous spots so that shoppers can be prepared for the tax added at the till.
You should check the price tags to see whether tax is included. For a while, at least until business practices related to the new tax rate have rooted down.
