Karinto2010/01/10

Don't confuse this delicious sweet with dog pxxs.
Karinto is a traditional sweet made mainly with flour, muscovado, water, and aerating agent (yeast or baking powder /soda). ‘Deep-fried hard biscuits glazed in muscovado icing’ is a description I can think of now.  Unlike other delicately sweetened (‘not sweet’ is a complement for well-made sweets in this country) Japanese confectionaries, the sweetness of Karinto can’t be more straightforward. Once you try it, you would feel your teeth start melting and blood sugar level jumps up.

The texture of Karinto is crunchy; hard, but not as hard as pork scratchings. Together with the addictive taste of sugar and oil, the comfortable crunchiness very likely make you eat up the whole packet at once, giving you enormous calories (100gramms of Karinto has about 440 kcal, which is only slightly fewer than potato crisps’).
Would you like me to send you a packet or two?

A Break from Winter2010/01/10

A cold front that had settled in over Fukuoka seems to have gone away. After a few severely cold weeks, the temperature reached over 10 Celsius yesterday. We enjoyed a brief break from winter blues before next winter pressure assaluts this town.

For those of you who are suffuring from severe weather worldwide(Where is the global warming, by the way? The arctic ice got thicker, I hope), I would like to bring you a bit of spring-ish feeling. I hope you will feel a bit of warmth from the picture above.

Invited by the sunshine, there were many walkers and strollers in the beach.

Don't worry. They were with their mother.

And behind rocks, I found these young people trying to catch their dinner.  Good luck, little anglers!
