A Fukuokan's Notes from Sapporo

Two pieces of great-sized sea bream that weighed(before it was dismembered) 5 kilos: JPY800

When he saw my face, my fishmonger shouted “We have a great sea bream today! Look at this head!”, waving the big head of the fish at me. At this very moment, today’s dinner was automatically decided to be fried sea bream with soy and butter sauce.  

Although the fish had sashimi-quality, I went for fried fish—how can sashimi be appetising when the temperature is 5 Celsius?

While I was photographing the other fish I bought (which will appear in this blog in due course), the fishmonger insisted I photo the head of the sea bream, too. Although I politely turned down his idea, explaining that it’s not nice to photograph his commodity unless I bought it, he again insisted I couldn’t show how big the fish was without showing how big the head was. Following his direction, or order, let me show an image of the head, which weighed about 1.4 kilos on its own.

Then, could you imagine how big it was, or how excited at and confident with this fish the fishmonger was?
