Seriously Winter ― 2018/01/31
Now we are deep in winter.
In terms of temperature, I like winter much better than summer.
Now the air is chilly but clear and refreshing, feeling almost pristine. The visibility couldn’t be better. The chilly wind (as if) freshens my brain up (when I am brave enough, or have, to, venture outdoor, such as strolling along a promenade or going to shopping on foot). Just right degree of coldness to enjoy a winter: cold enough but not as cold as water pipes get frozen or people die (though there are quite a damage on farming and people working outdoors).
I
like to use the word “Saekaeru(冴え返る)” to depict this particular condition. But
with my limited vocabulary, I am not sure how I can convey the nuance of this
word in English. My Japanese-English dictionary translates it as “crystal
clear”…mmm, does this expression really imply a sense of the joy of winter?
Cat in News ― 2018/01/31
A heart-warming (or anger-provoking or ridiculous in some ways) story.
The other day, a local news show reported about a cat rescued from a motorway.
The cat was found crouching on the fence of an elevated motorway, and the motorway emergency squad got into action to rescue it.
They stopped a part of the road and tried to catch the cat. After several attempts, they brought the cat that hid under their car’s engine compartment to a safer area by driving the car (is that safe for the cat?).
There was a 4 km of traffic jam due to this incident.
The consequence was not reported (or I missed it as I was cooking our dinner when the report was broadcasted), but I am quite sure that the cat in question walked away without saying thank you—as cats ‘usual.
Hey, who said we were cruel to animal? But I don’t know what would have happened if the any animal spotted there was not a cat. And I have a question: who is the most silly; a) someone reported about the cat to the road squad, b)the motorway guys who saved the cat but by putting it into the engine compartment where the cat could be minced or burnt, c) the TV station that reported it spending public money, d) someone who tries to tell you about the news (me)?
