Car Park ― 2009/10/30
It used to be extremely difficult, if not impossible, to find a parking space to squeeze in your car in the city centre. But now it became very easy to find one for shopping or other short-stay parking.
Reason1: Because of the long-lasting stagnation, less people go out to the city centre by car, scared off by the parking fees. Instead, they go out long way using motorways that has recently reduced the toll fee to only ¥1,000 (7.4 Euro, as of 2009/10/30) on weekends. (This is a part of Japan’s economic stimulus package. With this scheme, however, can we really reduce our CO2 emission by 25% , as our new PM has proudly declared?);
Anyway, and Reason 2: There are small privately-owned car parks like this.
Probably the land owners who run these type of car parks wait the property price goes up while paying tax on the ownership of the land with the earning from their car park business. So in terms of finding car parks, we can benefit from the depression. Far-fetched? Let’s look on the bright side of life.
You might find it technically challenging to park a car here. Pull in your car in an unoccupied space where you will find a number alloted.
Then in 3 minutes or so, the metal stoppers will automatically raise to keep your car from escaping.
To move your car, you have to pay your tariff, which is displayed on the screen of the paypoint at the entrance.
The charge can vary depending on the location of the park, as far as I know, starting at around ¥100/ 60min.
Other than this system, there are a variety of car parks with diffrent and tricky devices. It will take quite a bit of time to get used to all those systems!
